Hi Rex,

Have a look at http://wordpress.org/ for Web 2.0 publishing and online editing
with CSS, PHP etc
something like http://www.justhost.com/ for hosting $2.95 per year
http://www.elegantthemes.com/ for excellent WordPress themes $20 unlimited
theme download. Our YR11 ITS students use themes as a starting point to build
an 'authentic client' website, usually their parent, uncle or cousin.. using
Dreamweaver and FileZilla (portable version) to configure site then mainly use
the online WordPress dashboard to change CSS and PHP settings, CS4 for image
editing. There are heaps of great plugins i.e. locking the live site to appear
'under construction' while the student and client go about online development.
Students can easiliy activate plugins to run shopping carts, iPhone platform
delivery (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/browse/popular/) for the site,
moo tools, photo galleries etc

Our students are also running Google Analytics on their client site
http://www.google.com.au/analytics/sign_up.html (add to the footer.php file),
great to show global online traffic/business.

2010 was the first year we tried this approach and the students and teachers
thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cheers,
Brendon

Subject: [qsiteict] Publishing Students' Websites

My Computer Science students are currently doing a unit on web page design.
Can they publish their
websites to the web, eg somewhere within The Learning Place? Can we restrict
who is allowed to
view it?

Most websites will not contain any personal information, eg a website about a
video game but some
may contain personal information, eg My Family.

Cheers

Rex
