We did a 'functionality' review of different systems a few years ago and
didn't come up with a fool proof solution, but we are in the process of
decommissioning our existing Intranet because teachers need to know
things like Dreamweaver, VB, to make changes to it. Basically, no-one
except a special few knows how to use it properly so no-one uses it. We
have been using Masterfile for SET plans for a few years so we've
decided to give this a go. So far, so good. It seems to integrate well
with TASS. All of our student data automatically transferred into
Masterfile at the beginning of this year so when students login they
only get to view the courses they are enrolled in.

We are also using the 'communities' module to share documents and other
files with groups of people. You can restrict access to communities if
you need to.

Masterfile uses single sign-in so you are automatically logged in to
Masterfile when you login to the network.

Calendars is an area that we haven't looked at properly yet.

Subject: [qsiteict] Managing multiple school websites and preventing
duplication

Hi

I have a concern about Information management as it often happens in
schools, and wonder if anyone has found a successful way around the
problem.

Schools often have a range of web based sites, that often duplicate
information. This either leads to information that doesn't get correctly
updated or doesn't get done because the whole concept is perceived as a
waste of time.

An example might be Course overviews.

They could be on the school website, in a Virtual Learning Environment
like Moodle, and on the school intranet.

Similarly calendars. They exist in sites like TASS (used by some private
schools), Moodle again, and Intranet and school web sites.

Authentication processes like LDAP at least mean that one login fits
all, but there still seems to be so much duplication.

Has anyone suggestions on how they've successfully managed Information
to prevent duplication over a range of web based applications?

Paul
