ccache "replaces" the compiler calls, i.e. the Makefile calls ccache, which the calls the actual compiler if it doesn't find a cached result. You can use any technique you want to make the build system pick up ccache instead of the actual compiler. I've mentioned a couple of those, the ccache documentation has additional ones.
