I remember the widget designer went through a red-headed stepchild phase too.
It got better :-)
I'm getting good at coding these by hand, I think large part because I got good
at coding widget layouts by hand. But the key in Quick is to use components.
I've not event tried to use designer on a layout that uses components. But
nothing is hugely complicated with properly coded components.
How this pans out, I do not know. It could be that Widgets end up being used in
old designer. I don't know. I really loved that old system.

Subject: Re: [Qt-creator] Raise awareness: Qt Quick Designer's need for love
There are several issues crashing the qml2puppet and/or turning the designer
view totally blank (thus completely useless). I reported some of them, others
severely affecting the designer have more than 6months old.
For toy interfaces the designer works fine, but as soon as you do something
serious it shows its teeth. I have the feeling that the people involved in
mantaining the designer are not the ones using it for serious work, otherwise
the bugs would annoy them very frequently. Either QtC crashes because of the
rewriter or the qml2puppet crashes, or you get totally blank screens, or
incorrectly rendered items, or blank (transparent) items.
Check for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gerGN6IN7LY
I am eager to test patches and report, i pull master every morning (gmt-6).

(OTOH, Im a current strong advocate at two universities, i teach to at least
one full classroom every semester, but lacking basic reliability with
crashes/blanks/errors every 15min, makes it harder to argue in favor.)

I played with it more last night and it seemed better, but crashed frequently.
It seems that you have to start with a blank and work that. The small initial
layout I gave it I wasn't able to do anything. So My first assessment was not
as accurate as it should have been.
