Ok great,
I am using the MinGw compiler that ships with the Qt SDK. I see that this is only version 3.4.5. Just because I am curious, why does the SDK not ship with a newer version of gcc?

that's a problem caused by compilers inferior to gcc 4.3. :-D
already fixed.
