I like what XCode has - a current configuration dropdown and perhaps also a 'run' dropdown listing the available executables. Faster than the menus. Plus they are always displayed.
Not sure where you'd put them though... Tooltips are not that useful as they must be invoked with a rollover and they tend to be slow.
