OK, so it will still be able to playback the same audio/video formats,
but it might not be as good at fishing out meta info about them?

Excellent answers, thanks!

I ended up installing Visual Studio Express 2008 (which includes the
Windows SDK which again has all the above SDKs embedded), and then all
these tests passed with an "OK".

MinGW and Windows SDK is another story (fail) :)
