Why should you need to su to another user, can't you just copy the  
tar.gz to the guest account and build from there? You can just set the  
prefix to a directory in guest.

Look in the Makefile and see what's going on with those files.

Yes, I've seen those errors from other users before too, but can't  
remember what it was that caused the problem. It indicated something  
was wrong in the environment, but I can't remember what.

I'm still interested in trying with the guest account. Try again, and  
capture everything in the script(1) command include the output of set  
as well.

It seems we should be able to get this tracked down,
