I did now some more testing, but to me it's getting just more puzzling. Maybe
somebody else sees a pattern here.

The problem of not being able to use the satellite and terrain views really
seams to appear just on (at least our) Suse 11 machines.
I compiled my example on another Ubuntu machine where it worked.

Now, I remembered having once seen the satellite view on the example browser in
the demos directory.
If I use the qtsdk-2009.02 (at least) the precompiled browser will show the
satellite view. When I recompile the browser the same thing happends and I just
get symbols in the background being displayed for the missing pictures (where
in my minmal example the usual Google note is being displayed that at this
zoomlevel there are no pictures available). Also this works only the first time
using a maps.google.XX page after switching to the satellite view. After the
browser caches (or uses cookies) the data and knows its been there, a reload or
restart of the browser with the same maps.google.XX domain google maps itself
won't work anymore. Then the yellow banner at the top of the page appears
asking for Google Maps being too slow, and whether one wants to check out the
simple HTML version. This happens for both the normal map and also the
satellite map, but just after visiting the satellite view. Somehow the
Javascript seams to lock up.
Also this happens not just on my Suse 11 machine, but also on the Ubuntu
machine I tested my example on. This is also true for the my simple example,
after reloading the page (context menu) when I switched to the satellite view.

So my request again would be, could somebody check out the new symptoms ? At
least the reloading problem should be visible also on Ubuntu systems. I gonna
try it this evening on my home XP laptop again.

Any ideas ? :-)

Michael
