I've finally managed to get 4.6 to build with gcc-4.4, the DirectShow patches, and Phonon enabled.
I've tried playing several file types (wav, mp4, m4a, mp3, wma, etc.). Wav and mp3 files work fine in all cases. m4a and mp4 do not. However, for wma files, if I run my application under the debugger, they crash immediately when I play them. If I run the application without the debugger, though, they work fine. I suspect this has something to do with DRM on wma. Has anyone else seen a similar problem?
