The groupbox widget has this_current_screen_border= which you can set that annotates the screen with focus differently than other screens; I find that somewhat helpful. Also, some layouts hide their focus border when they're visible on a screen but not the screen with focus (e.g. stack and xmonad do this), which is also useful.
