Adding some more info. 

I'm using LightDM to launch qtile. I sourced the nix store from a few 
places: ~/.xsession, ~/.profile, and ~/.zshrc. None have worked in qtile, 
but ~/.zshrc has worked in the TTY Linux terminal.
