It appears that the widgets change size depending on their content - the same thing happens for me, but due to my particular configuration I never noticed it as anything negative. In your case I would suggest to work around the issue by reordering your widgets so there is a "buffer zone" (use: widget.Spacer(length=bar.STRETCH)) into which the widgets can grow without being pushed off the screen. Or maybe you already have a spacer with a misconfigured length?
