That's a great workaround, thank you Drew! Would you mind adding it to the 
alacritty issue, too? There were other people having the same issue.

Would it be a bad idea to set those variables globally? I have a bunch of 
applications having trouble with this, I even had to switch to urxvt for 
the time being.
