I agree with you, there is something strange here. The false default
value of the json key was removed on purpose (2d57b1d) but I am out of
imagination to understand why. Maybe a rollback on this should be proposed.

Can I point out that the documentation seems to indicate that false is
the default which I guess isn't the case if setting json=False fixes it.
