I had a totally random idea just now that might be useful: What if on the statusbar when you hovered over a group (desktop) with you mouse, it showed a mini picture-in-picture of what the desktop looked like, so you would have a "preview" before clicking into it.
Not sure if this is super useful but I bet it would look pretty slick.
