John & Jason, as if you didn't have enough list
items for Quackle improvements & features :)
To play like a really topnotch player, Quackle
will have to take advantage of full or partial
knowledge of opponent's rack when the situation
comes up. I recently had such a game at club,
thanks to winning a challenge, and tried to take
advantage of the knowledge I had in selecting my
next play. During post-mortem, though, I was not
able to tell for sure if I'd made the right play
to block my opponent's possible bingo comeback.
The situation can also come up after an overdraw,
of course, but knowing all 7 of the other guy's
tiles can really give a player an advantage.
P1 was me; I went first. P2 was my opponent.
P1: 'EIKNOOU' H4 KOINE 28
P2: I3 VAR 18
P1: 'BBDORSU' G6 BUB 19, 47
P2: J4 FARD 23, 41
P1: 'DEGIORS' F5 DOG 18, 65
P2: 3C LAN(D) 10, 51
P1: 'EEGIRST' C3 GEL 8, 73
P2: D4 R(A)NT 12, 63
P1: 'EEIQRST' exch Q (yes, I considered QIS)
P2: 8A CUTS 27, 90
P1: 'EEIIRST' A7 I(C)E 5, 78
P2: 'AEEILRS' 10A REALISE forming (ICE)R*
P1: Challenge! and REALISE went back on his rack.
So here's my situation: I know that opponent has
REALISE on his rack. Let's assume that I saw that he
could play C7 A(T)ELIERS on his next turn if I didn't
block the T somehow. So, I have to score and block,
and I'm 12 points behind (78-90)...
P1: 'HASTIER' and I chose 9A (E)H, keeping 'SATIRE'
Question One: Was that the right thing to do?
Question Two: Does Quackle take "knowledge of
opponent's rack" into account?
Not really necessary, but for the sake of
completeness, here is the rest of the game:
