Jana,
I'm not sure how far you've gotten, but the first step would be to
create a board. For legal reasons, Quackle does not come with the
Scrabble board by default. Click on the Settings tab and then Add
Board. After you've created a board, you can either click the New Game
button in the toolbar or choose New Game from the Game menu. You'll
want to add two players to the game, one is a Human player (yourself)
and one is a computer to play against. I usually play against the
Endgame Player. It is very strong and there is no option to play
against a weaker opponent. We will probably add difficulty levels to
Quackle eventually, but that is not a high priority.
We would like to provide documentation for Quackle in the near future,
and we plan to make the interface more intuitive, but in all honesty
it will never look or work like a mainstream computer game. We're
happy to have all the users we can, but Jason and I are expert
tournament players, and we've designed a program for our peers. We
have a lot of bugs to fix and things that don't work like we would
expect them to, especially on Windows, but we will never bury features
like simulation on Advanced tabs.
I won't say much about our relationship with GameHouse because we are
still in negotiations, but we support the work they are doing and vice
versa. As was announced at the US Scrabble Open in Phoenix, GameHouse
will soon be releasing a commercial product using Quackle. We will
probably be getting some new visitors to the Quackle mailing list and
quackle.org because Quackle was mentioned on the ESPN telecast of the
USSO finals this evening. Many of those folks will prefer GameHouse's
product to ours, and that's fine with us.
