It sounds as if somehow you reran the installer (perhaps thinking it was the
program itself) and in the process of cancelling it, inadvertently did a
partial uninstall or partial reinstall. I may be wrong.

In any case, here's what I suggest -- basically remove the old and reinstall
from scratch:

1. See if you can find "Control Panel" from the Flying Windos "Start Menu".
It may be plainly visible, or you may have to navigate the menu via
"Settings" or "All Progams".

2. Once in the "Control Panel", look for an item called "Add or Remove
Programs" -- double-click.

3. After a few moments it will present a list of all the programs on your
machine. Scroll down till you see Quackle. (If you don't see Quackle, go
to step 6)

4. Select Quackle. Click the "Remove" button. It will ask if you're sure,
and then remove Quackle.

5. If more than one Quackle showed up on the list, repeat step 4.

6. Close the "Add and Remove Programs" window and the "Control Panel"

7. Look on your desktop for any and all items with Quackle in the name.
Delete them (move to recycle bin).

8. Go to Quackle.org and re-download the program.

9. Reinstall it. When you double-click on the installer (probably on your
desktop), carefully note its name. It should be something like "
quackle-0.94-windows.exe<http://web.mit.edu/jasonkb/www/quackle/downloads/quackle-0.94/quackle-0.94-windows.exe>"
or
"quackle-0.94-windows(1).exe"<http://web.mit.edu/jasonkb/www/quackle/downloads/quackle-0.94/quackle-0.94-windows.exe>

10. The installer may ask if you want to make the installation to the
existing Quackle folder. Say yes.

11. Go back to your desktop. Find the installer again (the name you noted
above). Delete it.

12. Go to the Flying Windows "Start" menu and find the Quackle shortcut.
See if it works.

 Hi John,

Thanks for the info, but .....

I had already done all of that except for the flying windows bit.

The scariest part is, I had 0.94 up and running at one brief point and
then when I clicked on it again, all I got was installation
procedures/clicks/instructions.

Now, at some point I had noticed that 0.94 was not connected to the Gold
Star shortcut icon, so, to clean up my desktop and save myself some
confusion and aggravation, I deleted the Gold Star. Wrong move. That is
when the constant installation processes began in earnest.

So off I went to my recycle bin and put it back. The properties click
only tells me Quackle. No version number.

I do remember the brief point in time when 0.94 WAS up and running, I had
to create the board's premium squares. No can do on this one. No
possibility of saving a game on this one.

Mind you, this appears to be the version that didn't work at all when I
first installed it in March (according to the properties). And a right
click on the computer-and-cd icon only that only installs Quackle creates
another computer-and-cd icon. And since I can't get to a game via this
installation process, I can't right-click to create a desktop icon (that
hopefully will result in an updated Gold Star).

In short, I don't think Quackle likes my machine.

Ron is up and running and happy. He can't get it to behave on my machine
either.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Susi

Well, you might delete the one that doesn't work,
and use the one that launches version 0.94 to
launch the program.

[basic stuff follows; Windows experts may ignore]

If you aren't sure what a desktop shortcut does,
right-click it and select 'Properties' from the
menu that appears. On the Shortcut tab, you may
see something like this:
Target: "C:\Program Files\Quackle\Quackle.exe"
which would indicate that the shortcut will
launch the program you want.

There's another way to launch the program, too.
If XP works anything like Windows2000, which it
does in some ways and doesn't in others, do this:
Press the "flying Windows" key (next to Alt in the
lower-left area of your keyboard) and select
Programs, Quackle, Quackle 0.94. That's a bit more
cumbersome, but it does save you from the mysteries
of wondering just what a desktop shortcut might be
launching.

Once you have the program running, click Help and
About Quackle to see the version number. V0.94
identifies itself clearly.
