Hi Sky,
I do not have a site, but here is a link to some pictures I have posted at
yahoo http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos.
I do plan on building a site, but who knows when I'll get around to it.
Every time I think I have some time, I get into something else. I have a
hard time staying on track because I just go by moment a lot. I don't
think that's a total bad quality.
The illness that got me is a type of encephalitis. It's called "Acute Disseminated
Encephalomyelitis" It's inflammation of the brain and spinal
cord. It hit me pretty fast. I was at a cookout with some buddies and
about a week later came down with a pretty bad sinus infection that I blew off
due to I have allergies and get a sinus infection every year so I thought I'd do
as usual and self treat it. About a week after that I woke up with my back
killing me so I went to the doctor later that day and he took x-rays and after
accusing me for being on drugs since I looked so lethargic (I guess) told me I
probably slept wrong. He gave me a muscle relaxer and sent me home with a
script. I laid down on the couch when I got home and was in too much pain
to get up, I decided to stay where I was. In the morning my room mate went
to fill the script and tried to get me up off of the couch and it wasn't going
to happen so she ended up calling 911. I don't remember any of it. I
just remember falling asleep on the couch and waking up to find I was in the
hospital. I couldn't move a muscle including turning my head to
see around the room. I also remember trying so hard to move my
arms to see what the F..K was down my throat and tried like hell to move so
I could pull it out. My Mom was there and I remember the nurses
telling me the date and it was almost 3 weeks later. I waited tables here
in Ocean City, MD and it's a pretty big tourist town. I remember being upset
that I missed out on working Memorial weekend because it's pretty good
money. (like that is the most important thing. LOL) Anyhow about a
month later I started moving my arms and gradually got all my fine motor skills
back in my arms and hands. I recovered to the T 7/8 level and that is
where I stayed. There is damage to the cord and much atrophy. I'm
pretty darn grateful because the prognosis was pretty grim from what I
understand. The doctors told my Mom that if I survived it would be 6
months to a year before any signs of recovery and pretty much have to be taken
care of for the rest of my life. They figured that I would have brain
damage and all that fun stuff. I'm pretty lucky that I don't (well, no
more than before). I spent a total of 8 months in the hospital with 6
months of it being therapy and after that I came to live on my own. I
don't have a lot of family to count on so I worked my ass off to learn to take
care of myself. (Not that anyone has worked any less than I did.)
After fighting with HUD, I finally got rental assistance and live in a small
house back in Ocean City. So there ya go, my story. Nothing fun like
some others. I wish I had something to blame it on, but I don't so I
deal. Either sit and be bummed out all the time or deal with it and live
my life.
I am so glad to have you with us. It's like a breath of fresh air blowing
around here since you joined. Funny thing. When I introduced myself
I said I was 29, I just turned 30 on the 3rd and still telling people I am
29. It was purely an accident, promise!!!
