Blueberry compound shows promise of lowering cholesterol as effectively as drug
A compound in blueberries shows promise in preliminary laboratory studies of lowering cholesterol as effectively as a commercial drug and has the potential for fewer side effects, according to a researcher with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The compound, pterostilbene, has the potential to be developed into a nutraceutical for lowering cholesterol, particularly for those who don't respond well to conventional drugs used for this purpose, the researcher says.
"We are excited to learn that blueberries, which are already known to be rich in healthy compounds, may also be a potent weapon in the battle against obesity and heart disease, which are leading killers in the U.S.," says study leader Agnes M. Rimando, Ph.D. Researchers have suspected for some time, based on anecdotal studies, that blueberries may play a role in lowering cholesterol, says Rimando. Pterostilbene is an antioxidant that is similar to resveratrol, another antioxidant identified in grapes and red wine that is also believed to lower cholesterol. Other researchers have found pterostilbene in grapes, but this is the first time it has been found in blueberries, says Rimando. She and her associates earlier showed that this compound may help fight cancer. Pterostilbene has been reported previously by others to have anti-diabetic properties as well. Until studies are conducted in humans, no one knows how many blueberries a person needs to eat to have a positive effect at lowering cholesterol, Rimando cautions. Her study adds to a growing list of health benefits attributed to the little antioxidant-rich fruit, including protection against aging, heart disease and cancer, as well as acting as a memory booster.

Cold Weather Snaps Are Bad for Your Heart
MUNICH (Reuters) - Cold weather snaps can trigger heart attacks, particularly in people suffering from high blood pressure, researchers said on Monday. A 2-year study of 700 people admitted to hospital in France found the occurrence of heart attacks in people with hypertension, or high blood pressure, was twice as high when the mean temperature was lower than minus 4 Celsius (24.8 Fahrenheit). They also had a 62 percent greater risk of heart attack when the temperature difference between the day before and the day of the attack was more than 5 degrees Celsius. Yves Cottin and Marianne Zeller of the University of Dijon told the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology that susceptible people should be careful about activities in cold weather or when temperatures change suddenly. Their study also found a link with low barometric pressure, with more heart attacks occurring during a cold weather front. In addition to a general rise in blood pressure, colder weather can cause blood to become stickier and more likely to clot. Cholesterol levels also tend to be higher during the winter and an increase in respiratory infections may lead to inflammation that contributes of the rupture of artery-clogging plaques.

(#1) Father O'Grady was saying his goodbyes to the parishioners after his Sunday morning service as he always does when Mary Clancey came up to him in tears. "What's bothering you so, dear?" inquired Farther O'Grady. "Oh, father, I've got terrible news." Replied Mary. "Well what is it, Mary?" "Well, my husband, passed away last night, Father." "Oh, Mary" said the father, "that's terrible. Tell me Mary, did he have any last requests?" "Well, yes he did father," replied Mary. "What did he ask, Mary?" Mary replied, "He said, 'Please, Mary, put down the gun...'"
(#2) Athletes staying at the Olympic village have been told to dispose of their syringes more carefully after two cleaners suffered needle stick injuries... ..On the bright side, the cleaners grew to 6'8" and 320 pounds.
(#3)Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had set their new wives straight on their duties. The first man married a woman from Alabama and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and house cleaning that needed done at their house. He said that it took a couple days but, on the third day, he came home to a clean house and the dishes were all washed and put away. The second man married a woman from Florida. He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. He told them that the first day he didn't see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done, and the dishes were done, and he had a huge dinner on the table. The third man married a Texas girl. He boasted that he told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said that the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day most of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye! Still Love those Texas girls!!!!
(#4) An old man was relaxing at his hundredth birthday party when a reporter went up to him. "Sir, what is the secret of your long life?" The man considered this for a moment, then replied, "Every day at 9 PM I have a glass of port. Good for the heart I've heard." The reporter replied, "That's ALL?" The man smiled, "That, and canceling my voyage on the Titanic."
(#5) A rabbi and a priest met at the town picnic and began their usual "kibitzing." "This baked ham is just delicious," the priest teased the rabbi. "You really should try some. I know it's against your religion, but I can't understand why such a wonderful thing should be forbidden. You just don't know what you're missing. You haven't lived until you've tried Mrs. Kennedy's baked ham. Tell me rabbi, when are you going to break down and try a little ham?" The rabbi looked at the priest, smiled and said, "At your wedding."
