~TRAILS OF LIVING~ All because of an accident! It was 1818 in France, and Louis, a boy of 9, was sitting in his father's workshop. The father was a harness-maker and the boy loved to watch his father work the leather. "Someday Father," said Louis, "I want to be a harness-maker, just like you." "Why not start now?" said the father. He took a piece of leather and drew a design on it. "Now, my son," he said, "take the hole- puncher and a hammer and follow this design, but be careful that you don't hit your hand."Excited, the boy began to work, but when he hit the hole-puncher, it flew out of his hand and pierced his eye! He lost the sight of that eye immediately. Later, sight in the other eye failed. Louis was now totally blind. A few years later, Louis was sitting in the family garden when a friend handed him a pine cone. As he ran his sensitive fingers over the cone, an idea came to him. He became enthusiastic and began to create an alphabet of raised dots on paper so that the blind could feel and interpret what was written. Thus, Louis Braille opened up a whole new world for the blind--all because of an accident!
~TRAILS of LIFE~
Ready for Home by Max Lucado General William Nelson was a Union general in the Civil War. Though he faced death every day, he never prepared for his own. Who knows what he was thinking as he rode into battle after battle? Maybe he was too busy staying alive to prepare for death. All that changed, however, one day as he was relaxing in a house with his men. A brawl broke out, and he was shot in the chest. Knowing he was dying, he had only one request: "Send for a clergyman." What had happened? Why the urgency? Did the general suddenly learn something about God that he had never known? No. But he did learn something about himself. He realized death was near. Suddenly only one thing mattered. Why hadn't it mattered before? Couldn't he have said yes to God the week before or that very morning? Absolutely. Why didn't he? Why was the salvation of his soul so urgent after the shot and so optional beforeit? Why had he postponed his decision to accept Christ until his deathbed? Because he assumed he had time. A dangerous assumption. "Teach us how short our lives really are," prayed Moses, "so that we may be wise" (Ps. 90:12).
~TRAILS of SCRIPTURE~
14 Therefore since we have a great High Priest Who has already dwelt in the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession of faith in Him.
Hebrews 4:14
Jesus is superior, in every way, to all the High priests of Israel. Hereâs why:
As humans, they could offer sacrifices, but could do nothing to take away sin.
They could enter the Holy of Holies only once a year to make atonement for sin. Jesus has intimate access to God always.
High priests served to intercede between God and man, but were sinful themselves. Jesus, as our go-between â is the sinless Son of God.
High priests were the highest religious authorities for Jews. Jesus Christ had all power and authority as both God and man.
People were unable to reach God except through a priest. In Calvaryâs triumph, Jesus is the ever present comforter for every soul.
~TRAILS of PRAYER~
Holy Lord, only in you do I find what satisfies my soul's desires. The things that have captured my eye are boring after only a short while. The artificial things I have pursued, all of my addictive pursuits, have left me empty and enslaved. I find hope and help only in you. Please be near to love, correct, discipline, lead, and mold me to your glory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
