Hi Val,
Congratulations on the new facility, like I've said before Canadians have all of the fun!!!
On to a more serious note. As a former counselor, my concern isn't fully with a "cure", but with the questions about day to day survival. For some time now I've wondered about how to best help people with SCI, over the internet. The internet seems the most effective way for us to communicate with each other and to research our questions. If I had the money to back me, I would love to develop a 1-800 number and website in which I and others could answer questions. The questions people ask when they first "get out" of rehab and the questions people have after 20 yrs post. The individuals on the staff would have to be pretty knowledgeable themselves and knowledgeable as to how to obtain information they don't have. There are a multitude of information sites about SCI, but there isn't a place where people can call or write for information to their individual questions. No place with real-time and real life answers, or people willing to research the answers and follow-up with the individuals asking the questions. The questions and needs of individuals on the quad list are vast. We are people trying to find fair and affordable housing in every state of the union, we are people trying to find adequate care so we can live at home and not in a nursing home, we are people trying to find employment, affordable transportation, and we are people needing emotional support.
A cure would be fantastic !!! however, lets put some energy into helping those of us living the day to day reality of SCI. Believe it or not, there are no experts out there in social service.
Thanks for the question Cal and we would love to be informed about the progress of the facility.
