Tony...
Meet
people on a cruise? Anyone who has been on a cruise is laughing out loud
now! Seriously, you will never be among a more festive, partying,
approachable collection of people in any other circumstance, young or old.
I met people that I still exchange greeting cards with.
Yes,
there are specialty cruises for selective age groups, singles, etc., but every
cruise has activities and entertainment for singles, couples, kids, etc.
All of the big ships have multiple lounges for music and dancing. One may
feature big band music catering to an older crowd, while the late night lounges
feature more contemporary music for a younger crowd.
Like
you, I love my mom, but I do not want to spend 24/7 with her, and she feels the
same about me. This is yet another reason why cruises are perfect
vacations. My mother likes the slot machines and relaxing by the pool and
hot tub. I prefer exploring the ship and chatting with passengers and
service staff, and attending the various activities scheduled during the
cruise like cheese and wine tasting, art auctions (free champagne), ship tours,
etc. We hook up for meals and incidentals and usually take in the main
entertainment show for each evening. Afterward, I may check out the
karaoke lounge while she hits one of the dancing oriented lounges. It
works for us.
Some
of the cruise lines cater toward specific age groups. Holland America has
some of the best service in the business, but they will have an older collection
of passengers. Carnival and Princess cater to younger crowds. My
last cruise was on Royal Caribbean and it had a good mix of
ages.
I
mentioned the Hoyer lift since I recalled your concern about transferring.
How do you transfer?
That
is good that you can get someone to drive you to the port and back. It
would be a shame to have to pay $10 for parking
unnecessarily.
I work
for the federal government as an Information Technology Specialist (Computer
Nerd). I wear several hats including Internet/Intranet Project Manager, IT
Security Officer, and Systems Analyst. I love my job and can't believe I
get paid to do what I would be doing for myself if I didn't have this job.
I use voice recognition software as my primary input method. My
supervisors are very supportive of telecommuting and I use this option whenever
I am unable to be in my wheelchair, primarily due to
occasional minor skin issues.
I sure
hope Hurricane Jeanne doesn't come your way, but I can't wish it to turn north
as it would send it my way! I live in Brunswick, GA on the Atlantic
Coast.
Hunker
down, my friend...
Steve

Steve......man, thanks for the great info, you SOLD ME!! I'm going to start thinking about late Spring to do this cruise-thang to the Caribbean...wish i knew, or could meet, some people on the ship. Nothing against my mother, but i don't want to spend THE WHOLE time with her. Are there any groups that do a cruise at same time...or, younger-oriented (baby boomer) cruises??? My mother is a very younger thinking 68 yr old, so i think she'd like the younger cruise too.
As you might remember, i'm in Tampa Bay area, so i'm sure i could get a ride to the port, but not sure i'd need the hoyer, or how to get it there.
I really loved your detailed info, thanks a million. BTW, what kind of work do you do??? I'm just curious!!! ; ))
please ask Hurricane Jeane to start curving North....
