Tofu to mend bones -- Ananova: Tofu, the staple of many vegetarian diets, could soon be just as useful in the medical world. Doctors have found the soya product can be turned into 'scaffolding' to help bones mend before it biodegrades. The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts has invested Â149,000 in research to explore its potential further. Dr Matteo Santin of the University of Brighton, who is working on the project, said clinical trials in human patients could take place as early as next year. It is hoped the tofu bone filler could be used in car crash victims who need major reconstructive surgery. Dentists could also use it in patients with severe gum infections that have spread to the bone that supports the teeth.Dr Santin said: "What we have done is to transform the common tofu, the food you can buy in shops, into a biodegradable plastic. "When we started research activity, our goal was to use it to fill gaps in bone related injuries to regenerate the bone. "In the course of our research we found out that this material can induce the regeneration of bone in a relatively quick manner."

#1 Looking in the mall for a cotton nightgown, I tried my luck in a store known for its hot lingerie. To my delight, however, I found just what I was looking for. Waiting in the line to pay, I noticed a young woman behind me holding the same nightgown. This confirmed what I suspected all along: despite being over 50, I still have a very "with it" attitude. "I see we have the same taste," I said proudly to the 20 something behind me."Yes," she replied. "I'm getting this for my grandmother for Christmas." #2 To stop her 4-year old daughter from biting her nails, her mother tells her it'll make her fat. "I won't do it any more, Mom," says the daughter. Next day they are out walking when they meet a very fat man. "If I bite my fingernails, I'll be as fat as that, won't I Mom?" "You'll be fatter than that," says her mother. They get on a bus, and sitting opposite them is a very pregnant lady. The little girl can't take her eyes off the woman's belly. The pregnant lady feels increasingly uncomfortable under this stare, and finally leans forward and says to the little girl, "Excuse me, but do you know me?" And the little girl says, "No, but I know what you've been doing..." #3 An elderly woman walked into the local country church. The friendly usher greeted her at the door. "Where would you like to sit?" he asked politely. "The front row, please," she answered. "You really don't want to do that," the usher said. "The pastor is really boring." "Do you happen to know who I am?" the woman inquired. "No," he said. "I'm the pastor's mother," she replied indignantly. "Do you know who I am?" he asked. "No," she said. "Good," he answered. #4 The teen-ager lost a contact lens while playing basketball in his driveway. After a fruitless search, he told his mother the lens was nowhere to be found. Undaunted, she went outside and in a few minutes returned with the lens in her hand. "How did you manage to find it, Mom?" the teen-ager asked. "We weren't looking for the same thing," she replied. "You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I was looking for $150."
