My boyfriend walked away with a broken jaw (mine was broken too as well as my femur and my neck!)

His father came down hard on him (I heard) like "Look what you did to her!"

He'd come visit me when in ICU but, I assume, he didn't know really HOW to act at age 17.  So he acted
jerky around the nurses, etc.  After a couple months I asked that he not come by anymore.

Haven't seen him since.  I heard he eventually married and had 2 kids but no idea of details.

I'm 40 now.  Will be 41 late July.

Yup... Car accident.  I was 15.  Tractor-trailer pulled out in front of my
boyfriend (age 17 - the driver) after dark on our way back from
McDonald's (ten minutes from home).

He swerved into the oncoming lane but a car was coming so he angled back
in.  But only far enough where MY SIDE went under the semi.  A single
incident whereby HAVING ON a seatbelt would have had me decapitated.

I wasn't wearing one and was found turned face-down into the seat.

I remember none of it - or ten minutes prior to it.  Which I heard is
common ... with trauma like that the brain forgets the fifteen minute
time frame prior TO the trauma.

I was lucky to survive in the tiny OLD hospital I was taken to.  But I did.

Moral to my story ... don't quit while you still have a head!

Same as Marikay except 25 yrs for me.

I never remember ANYONE saying "you're paralyzed for the rest of your life."  But my injury was so severe .. was in ICU 3 months ... I was trying to stay alive and I guess I was just confused over everything.  Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much going on.  It was a YEAR in all as an inpatient so it was a "day by day" thing I guess.

Hey gang,
how did you find out that you had a SCI? Family member, doctor or reality? How did they say it? What did you do, think or say?
