Yeah, legally you owe them the $.  It sucks that they were so unprofessional and dis-organized about collecting it, but you are in possession of something that at this point you haven't paid for and they have.  If I were you I'd be very irritated too.  I went shopping in January at a boutique in the mall.  The store never charged my debit card at all for the purchase (which I never noticed, because I don't keep very close track of my accounts.) Then, in late March, they charge my check card $200.  It bounced, because I was completely not expecting the charge, and had no idea it hadn't been charged in the first place.  I tried to dispute the charges with my card, because I thought it was ridiculous for a company to put a charge like this through so many months later.  They usually post the same day! It was clearly some kind of big oversight on their part, but the bank sided with them (not too surprising when you think about it.) I still had their merchandise and hadn't paid for it.

In your case, I'd be far more annoyed, because it's a bigger ticket item, and you took pro-active action TWICE to try to get the situation rectified.  I'd be really steaming mad.  But, it doesn't change the fact that you owe them the $.

You guys give me your take on this. Last October i ordered an air mattress
online for $1500. I paid with my debit card. When I got my bank statement it
showed they had debited me only $2.07. I called them and they thanked me
profusely. After a few days I checked my account. Another $2.07!. I called
them a total of three time each time receiving assurances of a corrected
account. Never happened. In december my van broke down and I had to use the
$1500. I also cancelled my debit card.
Now, six months later, they call me wanting payment. I am furious. Now I
have to take out a loan. i haven't done so yet. I am awaiting their next
move.

What is your opinion of this?
