If one DOES NOT HAVE a supplemental Medicare insurance ... one has to pay $750 upfront if "admitted"
to a hospital. This is one of many reasons to HAVE a supplemental in your pocket.
All this & more is explained in THE MEDICARE & YOU 2005 handbook. 1-800-MEDICARE <-- people to ask questions to as well as booklet sources.

From my experience, Medicare pays for "hospital" stays and most 'stuff' you
get while in the hospital. They will pay for hosp.beds (I got a 'fully'
electric chair by writing a letter and a former attendant wrote a letter
saying she had to quit because with a bed so low she could not transfer me)
They will pay for a 'nurse' who can come once a day if there is a medical
reason --changing dressing, IV's etc. I have a nurse who comes once a week
that mecicare pays for.
Medicaid pays for everything else--things in the hospital that Medicare will
not, homemakers, attendant care-from agencies- and of course the biggest
thing--meds. Medicare will not pay for meds.
I don't know about the supplemental stuff. If you want control of who works
for you, and your insurance pays for it--stay with your insurance with
Medicare as your primary. The agencies are the pits to work with and many
times they will leave you in bed, will comes hours later than they say, If
you are not able to "watch" them while they are working, agency people will
do as little as they can! I know not "all" do, but the majority do. Even
if you leave notes around to put things here or there, they will ignore it.
And if they think you are too much work, that homemaker will complain to
their supervisor and they will send someone else. It works the other way
too--if you find someone you like, you can call the schedular and say you
like so and so, can she be here all the time. Here, they are pretty good at
that--it might be because if they send someone I do 'not' like, they hear
about it! BG!
