Raytheon (name du jour) moved us 3000 miles cross country only to lay my husband off (along with 400 other engineers) ONLY 8 MONTHS of being here in Tucson.

These jobs that depend on contracts can turn over a person's life on a dime.

Tucson's housing market is so high in price that it's criminal.  But now there's talk of Davis Air Force Base here closing its doors.  Wonder if that will put a bit of a dent in the market here.

Dave...

Say it isn't so.  I, too, work in IT, but work for the government, 14 years
on June 1.  They are not sending our jobs over seas, but our staff has
increased by roughly 50% in the last five years and all new hires are
contractors.  If a federal employee leaves through retirement or taking
another position, they are replaced by a contractor unless it is a
management position.  Contractors typically higher kids right out of school
so they can pay them the lowest rate.  Often times these kids think they
know everything, so you have to deal with someone for several months who
views you as an impediment at best, a dinosaur at worst, until they realize
that corporate/historical knowledge is valuable if not essential in any
workplace and suddenly you are not so dumb after all.  By this time, they
have already obtained whatever additional certification(s) they have been
working on and move on to the next highest bidder once their contract runs
out.  Then the cycle begins again with their replacement.

I am just thankful to have a job that not only affords good pay, it's
something I would do for free if I did not get paid otherwise.  I consider
IT a passion, not just a job.

I wish the best for you, Dave...
