Hi Corie,

I was diagnosed Complete at the time of my injury but using the ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) scale I am "B" Incomplete.

American Spinal Injury Association Categories

A-Complete. No sensory or motor function is preserved in the sacral segments S4-S5.

B-Incomplete. Sensory but no function is preserved below the neurological level and extends through the sacral segments S4-S5.

C-Incomplete. Motor function is preserved below the neurological level, and the majority of key muscles below the neurological level have a muscle grade less than 3.

D-Incomplete. Motor function is preserved below the neurological level, and the majority of key muscles below the neurological level has a muscle grade greater than or equal to 3.

E-Normal. Sensory and motor function is normal.

I hope this helps.

With Love,

Hi Amy.  I'm incomplete and like you have movement in my toes and can push my right foot down.  I can also feel my muscles in my calves and quads twitching when I try to move my legs and my mom can feel the muscle twitching as well.

I have been injured almost 12 years and 6 months after my injury I started wiggling one or two toes on each foot.  As the years have gone by, I have gotten more strength in my toes, especially in my right foot.  I've also regained some movement in three of my left fingers.  Unfortunately, none of it has been functional.  Like your doctor, my physiatrist has not thought much about my movement in my toes either, but he is great about listening to me as far as if I want to go get more physical therapy then he will send me to do it.  I have been focusing all my energy on school, work, and my severe chronic pain over the last 10 years that I haven't gotten back to get a whol! e lot more therapy on my legs.  Also, I just got a baclofen pump to help with my spasticity, tightness, and hopefully to relieve some of my pain, so am planning on getting back into physical therapy this summer.  I know another quad who got a baclofen pump a year after his injury because he was so contracted and tight and the pump made a huge difference for him as far as helping him to regain more movement and strength and he can now stand and take some steps.  I'm not expecting it to do that for me, but hoping it may help even more with the little movement I have gotten back over the years.  You just never know!

So if I were you, I would either go to a physiatrist (rehab doctor) if that's not who you are seeing now and/or ask your current doctor if he will send you to have more PT or at least to be evaluated since you have regained more movement.

Good luck and keep me posted!

Subject: [QUAD-L] Regaining movement

I dont know how many of you are incomplete, but can you feel your muscles when they twitch etc? I have regained the movement of 3 toes in the last 6 years. I can feel the muscles in both of my legs twitching when I try moving them. My mom can put her hand on my leg/foot and feel the muscles flexing.

So the question is: what kind of doctor should I go see? The current one doesnt seem impressed! This is amazing to me. What do you think??

Thanks, littlequad
