Hi River,

Thanks for saying that for me.  You would think those of us on this List would understand the pain of being different from others, and have that difference held against us in life.  When things get down to a "them" vs. "us" mentality we ALL are losing the qualities "they" have to make "us" better people.

In the fall of this year the new Civil Rights Memorial Center will open in Montgomery, Alabama, to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott, and will remind visitors that everyday people are responsible for the progress of the past, the work of the present and the vision for the future.

This memorial sits only a few blocks west of the first capitol of the Confederacy, the spot where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office to become President of the Confederate States.  From Court Square to the north and west of this site the order was sent in 1861 to "reduce" Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War.  Ninety-four years later, on a December evening, Mrs. Rosa Parks began a historic bus ride from Court Square.  East of the memorial is the Dexter Avenue (King Memorial) Baptist Church, where a young pastor named Martin Luther King, Jr., led the movement Mrs. Parks began.

Today, too many of us have forgotten the lessons learned over the past fifty years, and let intolerance walk freely among us.  Will we let the battle for equality among all people become a meaningless gesture?  I hope not!  I hope we all here remember that WE too are responsible for the progress of the past, the work of the present and the vision for the future.

As Robert Kennedy once said:

"Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of these acts will be written the history of [each] generation. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

I really can't believe my eyes, as I read the various posts on this
list about Hispanic, Latino and Chicana people in our country. If
anyone remembers, this country belonged to a WIDE variety of brown
skinned peoples BEFORE the influx of the pilgrims. We continue our
modus operandi ----stealing countries----hundreds of years later.

I am ashamed to be a member of a list that unashamedly espouses such
hatred for a group of people. I include people making "jokes" and
"teasing", it's just FUC**NG rude and immature.
You people su*k.

Over and out,

oriented Hispanic, Chicana and Latino people who were my peers and
FAMILY members)
