Lets not worry about Hispanics. We are all part of one of the most ignored
minorities and reading these posts I can see why. When you were injured you
joined a small race of people that many others do not like. People really think
that the government gives handicapped folks all kinds of benefits that
we don't deserve. I've had people say to me that I'd be better off dead. I've
heard EMT's say they slow-rolled a victim with a SCI so they wouldn't have to
live such an awful life. When you can't get into a government building, a
restaurant, a school or any other place where the public is welcome, you should
know you are a second class citizen.
I am personally offended when I hear that I should check into "faith based" charities for help because the government won't be helping me with prescriptions after a certain date. Faith based assistance is another way of telling me if I want help, I'd better pray. I'm tired of seeing that the state spends more on rehabilitating drug abusers and alcoholics than it does on people with Central Nervous System damage. (I wouldn't be so messed up if it weren't for an alcoholic.) We are the people that most folks don't want around. Illegal aliens can at
least walk. I have been told that I'm too messed up by to work for several
companies. Not because I wasn't qualified, but because I make people
uncomfortable.
I don't think illegal aliens or immigrants or policies about them deserve
our time unless they have a serious SCI or brain damage!
I don't hate anyone, but I also know that as people with disabilities, we
are a minority that is still hidden away like a dirty secret.
I hope none of you quit the list. Here is where you have a value. This is
where you are needed and respected. This is the first step in helping ourselves.
Don't go! Please?
