Dear Bobbie,
I have tilt in space and recline. The legs and back can be moved individually. It will do a trendelemburg. (not sure its spelled right) Get full foot plates, not heel plates. that's too simple to not have. You'll need an electrically adjustable headrest. Insist on a 24 to 110 power inverter built into it. (I've never gotten one, but still ask) If they say no, ask for a 12volt power outlet. Then buy your own inverter. Ask them for the largest batteries they can squeeze into the thing. Don't settle for 22nfd's. (anything smaller than those are barbie batteries) Get the deep trough armrests and be sure they are adjusted right for you. make sure that none of the wires are compromised when the chair articulates! You wouldn't think this is necessary but trust me, do it. A cell phone/palm pilot designed into it would be awesome but, medicare is going to deny so much now, that could appear frivolous. You will need small reflectors. Tell them you have to be able to sit at a normal height table, as well. I have a state of the art lap table that is bulletproof. (curious why someone would spec that)
You must have an electric switch that opens a valve allowing you to empty your leg bag. This really is a device that gives you independence. Battery charger should be built in so you can plug in anywhere, but so far I've only seen that option on "Permobile". Medicaid won't even consider that chair unless you know the governor.
The center wheel drive gives great maneuvering indoors with minimal carpet damage.  Six wheels is a stable ride but won't get you where the four wheel drive will that you might want outside. I prefer the six wheel set up as I don't do much off roading.

Now, you think I'm being silly. I'm very serious. My 1st chair was trash and lasted 6 years. My second chair reclined and my brother and neighbor kept it going for 11 years. (I was working and paying for my own chair) I have had three other chairs since then. What I have now is nicer than anything I have ever had. It is a invacare TDX center wheel drive. Yes, it has had to go back to the shop, but it has never taken more than a day, and parts for it are not hard to get because we discussed part suppliers before I decided on it
Be sure it feels right. Don't let them hurry you. I stop in every few months and let them adjust mine and clean the battery terminals. (maintenance free is a state of mind, not a battery)
If you smoke, stop, or get a cigarette lighter.

I hope I was some help.

I have tilt & recline. I use the recline more often than the tilt when sitting at the computer. I tilt back slightly before I recline so I don't slide down. When my muscles start feeling stiff I recline which causes me to spasm then I feel better. I can't do that with the tilt only.

I also have power elevating legrests so I can lift my legs straight out. Helps cut down on edema in my feet.

Hi All,
OK, I'm going to try on Friday to get a brand new power chair for myself. I'm on straight Medicaid and I'm 32 yrs post C 5,6 drive a van, love being outdoors even in the snow & rain, live in New Jersey and am a peer counselor.
~ Question ~ What should be on my wish list for my new power chair? Should I get tilt & recline or just tilt? (I've never had either in all these years) What is a BAD make or model? What is a great make & model? Should I get more than four wheels, like some have six?
