Absolutely, have you tried Amtrak?  I looked at a cross-country trip but
haven't jumped on yet.

Rentals a nice if you "Got Da Dough", but I also like to use and
evaluate public transportation and be able to recommend it to others who
travel light.  
That includes
Amtrak and Greyhound Bus system.  $1.50 is cheaper than $100.00 when
traveling light... and in style!
