At the Independent Living Center I once worked at we had a 'loan
closet.' Everything from commodes to walkers to manual wheelchairs
to lifts. People would donate these items to our center and we'd
loan them out so have her call her local ILC or CIL as a start. If
they don't have a lift ask her to ask them to direct her to places that
might have one. Do net searches too.
Unsure where she lives but these are good prices FOR MEDICAL
EQUIPMENT! Mine is the 2nd lift down on this site. And my
hydraulics care going so I too may be ordering from them. Free
shipping! Maybe the accept insurance too. Dunno:::
Many individuals have loved ones who pass on and need to get rid of
equipment like that. I found my electric hoyer via the
newspaper. I keep it for back-up as old faithful is easier for
ME.
If she needs help and is a church member ... ask for help
there. WWW.TheFamilyCaregiver.org
has a host of tips on what to do. I take it family is
unavailable? Eric ... these are common sense answers ... where are
you? LOL
Ya, being disabled makes one eligible for Medicare but one has to
apply. Then it's 2 years to wait unfortunately unless one is over
65. Either way the Medicare amount is based on how much he earned
when he DID work. If they have a low income then they can be
eligible for MediCAID virtually overnight which will get him home health
aides quicker.
We're only getting a small glimpse of their whole picture
situation.
If she has questions ask her to call her local Social Security
office first too (on eligibility). If she has net access ... most
answers are found at www.ssa.gov
What a hassle this new plan will be unless it WILL help pay for
prescriptions. Since MediCARE does NOT right now.
ALL MediCAID recipients will have to switch to
this plan too if I understand correctly. So all of you who have
been in a comfort zone ... wake up and be aware of the 2006
plan!

I just got more information on the quad I was trying to
help. His wife
is his only caregiver. I thought she was just getting
burned out.
Apparently she has cancer and the chemo has rendered her too weak
to get
him out of bed. They don't have a lift. As
long as I'm on the subject,
anyone know where to find a used hoyer? So any
additional thoughts you
might have would be appreciated.
Doesn't being disabled automatically qualify one for
Medicare? If so,
how long does it take to cover you after you apply? I
thought I saw
something in a newsletter about a waiting
period. Thanks
Eric
