You just start planning your night carefully and making sure you have things you need where you can get to them. Telephones are nice but you have a point. I don't mind the lonliness, but I sure hate when my bodily functions occur 8 hours before anyone will be around to clean me up. I do have a phone and there is usually someone to call. Panicking doesn't help.
