BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — As power outages statewide were reduced to 375,000 on Wednesday, Alabama Power Co. officials rated Hurricane Katrina the most destructive storm in the utility's history.

"Damage-wise, it's the biggest storm on record for us," spokeswoman Carrie Kurlander said.

At its peak, Hurricane Katrina left about 800,000 homes and offices without electricity. The number has been cut in half in less than two full days of work, but about 173,000 Alabama Power customers were still out in the Mobile area Wednesday morning, as were about 79,000 in the Birmingham area and 62,000 in the Tuscaloosa area.

Hi CtrlAltDel,

Cheers for letting me know, and cheers to everyone else who replied as well!  Do you know weather Alabama was caught up in Katrina's path at all?  It's only coz one of my best mates live there and for some reason I can't get in touch with her.  It's prob just crowded phonelines but I though I'd check anyway!

Glad your safe,

Hi Smurf,

I'm fine here in North Texas, but unfortunately there are many that have lost lives, homes, and family.  I pray for all those effected by Katrina.
