I've been thinking about you & that Greg.I think you & I are the only ones with this issue who either aren't on welfare or have family doing the duty. However, In cities our size there HAVE to be people out there looking for the work we need who do work for hospitals, rehabs, & agencies but who'll work privately under the table too.I was talking to my GEM of an aide last night who works for me privately (she a PERFECT aide and only 22). She says all the rat agencies are trouble (no news to me). She said she worked for an older guy a couple years WHO PAID CASH TO THREE DIFFERENT AGENCIES and they STILL couldn't keep him covered! That is MEGABUCKS FOR AN AGENCY but still poor or no service!!! Unreal with more & more elderly!I mentioned to her what you said ( wish there was a service that could match up quads that lived by eachother. So if their helps were interested in making a few extra bucks, they could run over to help another quad. For emergencies and vacations. It sure would be helpful) ironically!BUT I also noticed that these towns (compared to my small upstate area) run rampant with thousands of ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES and Nusing Homes despite them charging two arms, two legs & an asshole TO MOVE IN and to live in them! THAT is part of the problem.I know this is true in N. Carolina too because I hired a great aide (age 65 but acted 35 in health, etc) in NY. I had her 18 months and she was in tears when we left. After we moved to AZ she moved to NC near a daughter. She was unable to find any private duty cases like me and said everything down there was ASS. LIV. HOMES and N. Homes too. She even put ads in the paper w/ no results! Here in our area of NW Tucson we get a free weekly newspaper thrown in our driveway that has NW happenings, etc. It has classifieds in the back and I've seen several ads put in the by aides looking for private work. Even a guy advertised abt 4 months ago.Nothing in your area of Phoenix like that???Have you and the Dave (from Phoenix) q-list member met yet?I was forcing the MediCARE agency to give me what I'm eligible for until they found a way to dump me (claiming no aides and my Dr was a pussy) in early August.I found a Philippino via the Mormon Church to hire 3 days a week at $8/hr and hire my gem aide (who worked for the agency but stayed on w/ me as she knew I needed her) for help on commode nights.ANOTHER IDEA- The U of A here has a Disability Resource Center and they keep a list of aides periodically plus they will leave an ad by someone like us and they'll send it to a nursing student's email listserv. Maybe the Universities there have a similar thing.AND our ILC keeps a list of aides and will give you the list upon request.Granted ... it's hard to find matches but what have you done so far that has given you "no luck?" Seriously so I can offer other avenues.Did you find an aide for weekends? Your aide may flake out after all these yrs so best to be prepared. And we can start something like you mentioned instead of doing nothing. It's hard I know! I just put pressure on my Dr to find me Medicare help and on Friday he said he found someone called The Fountains Home Health and Hospital Services to cover nursing visits and commode nights. I'll believe it when I see it. But it's MY FICA $$$ I paid into!Lori MichaelsonAge - 41C4/5 complete quad, 26 years postTucson, AZ-------Original Message-------I'm not having luck trying to find help for the week after Christmas. My helper is going on vacation. I only need someone for an hour in the mornings to get me up for a week. The services can't find anyone willing to do it. I was willing to pay the $25 hr, but now I might have to pay for 3 hours every morning, just to get me up.I wish there was a service that could match up quads that lived by eachother. So if their helps were interested in making a few extra bucks, they could run over to help another quad. For emergencies and vacations. It sure would be helpfulGreg
