Hi Theo, Many times, quads need help or assistance with coughing. Actually the diaphragm needs a short pull to assist in the coughing process. Physical Therapist, are excellent trainers in the process as you need to support the diaphragm and not the rib cage. Thumping on the back is also good for loosening phleme. But you better know what you are doing again, to prevent serious injury. Best Wishes W
