Brooke Ellison recently announced plans to run for a New York state senate seat in the 2006 elections. Injured in a car accident at age 11, Ellison entered the national spotlight upon publication of her book Miracles Happen: One Mother, One Daughter, One Journey, which chronicles her experiences growing up with a disability. The Brooke Ellison Story, directed by Christopher Reeve, premiered last year on the A&E cable channel. The 26-year-old Democrat vows to address the lack of affordable housing for young adults in her Long Island district, slow the decline in open space and environmental protections, and support funding for embryonic stem-cell research, among other issues, according to a report in Newsday. Presently, Ellison is working on a doctoral degree in political psychology at SUNY-Stony Brook. |
