1- APPLY BY MARCH1 FOR NATIONAL ADA SYMPOSIUM SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships to attend the 2006 National ADA Symposium in St. Louis are available to Indiana residents
The Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center is a co-sponsor of the National ADA Symposium (www.adasymposium.org) scheduled for April 10-12, 2006 in St. Louis, MO. This symposium offers a unique opportunity to explore many issues related to the ADA and network with individuals working in a variety of areas across the country. In support of attendance at this event the Great Lakes Center is making a limited number of scholarships available to assist with offsetting the cost of attendance. The maximum amount of the scholarship awarded is $600.00. Governmental entities are not eligible for the scholarship. The Scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis until all scholarships have been awarded. Applications may be submitted through March 1, 2006. The scholarship application is available to complete online or can be downloaded at Great Lakes' website (www.adagreatlakes.org). For more information or questions, contact the Great Lakes ADA and

2- MARCH 1 FOCUS GROUP ON HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION IN INDY
Dear friends and colleagues, On March 1st parents and family members are invited to participate in a focus group to gather information on a postsecondary tool to be used by states to help improve curriculum and services at local school districts for students in transition. If you have access to parents and families, Teresa Grossi, Director of the Center on Community Living and Careers – Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, and I are asking for your assistance in notifying parents and families of this opportunity to have their ideas and suggestions heard.
-Purpose: Family Members will be asked for ideas on communication strategies that may be successful in gathering information about young people after they leave high school; and to review a draft data collection tool to see if they think the questions will provide good information.
-Who: Family members of young adults or young children with disabilities
-Date: March 1, 2006
-Time: 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm or 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
-Where: North Central High School – Room H 193, 1801 E. 86th Street, Indpls, IN. 46240, 317-259-5301
-Parking: Park on the East side of the building, enter through door 3 and follow the signs to “Parent Focus Group”.
If you are attending the 3:30 p.m. parent focus group, we suggest that you do not arrive earlier than 3:15 p.m. because of school buses are loading and departing the parking lot.

3-COMMUNITY EVENTS CELEBRATING MARCH DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH

Evansville IDEAL Day Saturday, March 25, 10:00am -The first annual IDEAL Day sponsored by Old National Bank is planned to recognize March as Disabilities Awareness Month. We at Downtown Evansville, Inc. want to celebrate activities for individuals with disabilities by having a day that they can share with their families and enjoy entertainment and activities geared toward their ABILITIES. This is a special time for children and adults to come together and share in the fun while learning the beauty of the diversity of people in our community.

Bloomington Dynamic Differences Night March 10: Indiana University's Student Recreational Sports Center, in conjunction with Bloomington's Council for Community Accessibility, will host Recreational Sports Family Night on March 10, from 6:30-9:00 p.m. Dynamic Differences will celebrate our unique differences and participate in inclusive games to raise disability awareness. The Council for Community Accessibility will offer hands-on disability awareness activities throughout the evening. Stone Belt of Bloomington will manage arts and crafts activities. First Steps will offer Denver Screenings for children ages 0-3. All community members are welcome to participate. For additional information, call (812) 855-7772. The SAMHSA Resource Center to Address Discrimination and Stigma Associated With Mental Illness (ADS Center) invites you to participate in free teleconferences. Remaining training dates and topics are listed below.

5-COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH PARENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Through the Looking Glass(TLG), non-profit organization, is pleased to announce the 2006 College Scholarship Fund specifically for graduating high school seniors who have parents with disabilities. Scholarships funds are available to graduating high school students who:
 1.  Demonstrate academic and personal achievement;
 2.  Have grown up with at least one parent with a disability; and
 3.  Will be a high school graduate or graduating senior by Summer 2006
Up to ten separate $1,000 awards will be given out in Summer 2006.
These awards are one of several projects of Through the Looking Glass' National Resource Center for Parents with Disabilities. More information and application forms are available on Through the Looking Glass' website: www.lookingglass.org

6-DYSLEXIA INSTITUTE OFFERS FREE PARENT EDUCATION CLASSES ON TUESDAY EVENINGS

7- SAT APRIL 22 STATE LIBRARY HOSTS VISION EXPO
The Indiana talking Book and Braille Library would like to invite members of the blindness community, their friends and families, educators, service providers, and other interested persons to a vision expo at the Indiana State Library, Saturday, April twenty-second, from 11 AM. Until 3 PM.  The expo will feature exhibits of adaptive technology and other independent living aids for all ages with various degrees of vision loss.  Information about programs and services for persons with vision loss will also be available, including catalogs and brochures from businesses and agencies unable to attend.  For further information about the Vision Expo, contact Carole Rose, Expo Coordinator at (317_232-0609 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

PLEASE NOTE: Council E-News is the e-mail newsletter of the Governor's Council for People with Disabilities. It is sent out on an occasional basis usually twice a month but more often when the legislature is in session.
