I used to for about ten years!  Bad sludge and sediment began blocking my caths in 1989-1990.  It was something new so I was initially scared as we couldn't figure out why, one night (OUT OF TOWN TABOOT!)  in a hotel it clogged.

Anyway bein asymptomatic for UTI ... I didn't treat because of some sludge.  This went on until the year 2000 and it cleared up pretty good.  The bad news is ... THAT is when my fever-symyptom UTIs began.  Until then I had been UTI free for the most part.

I'd rather have the sludge!  While my cath still is pretty gunky (even on an antibiodic) ... it's not blocking the flow off.  Sometimes hubby (or me ex yrs ago) would pinch it out from my pubics down to the end and let it go for me to pee and push it all put.  But that doesn't get what is in  the tubing between what we can see of the foley and what is between my meatus and bladder area of the tubing.

The CareCure community says they did away with advising irrigating back in the 80s.  But some of us have to!  The info given on that site one must weigh heavily.  8-12 months ago an SCI nurse suggested I irrigate with a betadine/water combo.  Then other nurses said NO WAY ... TOO CAUSTIC for/on the bladder!  As well as my Dr's advice.  And I almost did it as I was desperate TO CLEANSE out these persistant bugs!

I'd say irrigate when necessary.  Because ya can be pushing sludge back up in there and that is uncool.  Yet I did it for years to keep the tubing unobstructed with no problems.  It's a guessing game.
