Hi Stunt,
Hey, great news on getting the Waiver started. I sometimes think that if ALL I get the Waiver to do is pay my premiums, I'll be happy with it. With all the Plans Medicare has today, my premiums are getting pretty high. I've been on an "Interest List" only 18 months, so I'm not giving up "Interest" yet!
With Love,

It took over 6 yrs for me to get on the Waiver program here in Indiana, and another year to get Medicade to completely switch me over. March is my FIRST month since my injury where I didn't need to meet a $300+ spend down. (they claimed I made too much on SSI) Our State has a lot of catching up! to do, AND regs that need changing. Someone who never worked a day in their life gets section 8, which puts them above my standard of living. I don't qualify. Now I get 72hrs a mo for a Homeworker to make lunch, dinner, clean the house, and go shopping with me. Then on top of that, aid care 2hrs morning and again at bedtime. This last year has finaly freed my family from making sure the house is clean and meals twice a day 7 days a week. I know they were getting burned out.Yes, I had a couple of rip-offs over the years. I've managed to save enough for a multi camera monitoring system which can be set to upload streaming video clips to a server besides your home computer HD & VHS recorder. You can also see who is in front of your house. I want to evaluate it before recomending the $300 system.Stunt

I know I hate people coming in and out of my house I don't know!! I too have gotten stuff stolen..I finally talked my buddies wife into doing it for me!! For 3 year's I've been enjoying her ..I like being by myself too..But I'm glad I have someone I get along with as much as I do her ..I still do for myself as much as I can..and spend time alone during the day once I'm up in my chair..I've got 20 year's under my belt now.. Family's need's to give us some since of independence..It keep's us sain..At least me!!ZerawHi,
I had wonderful insurance that paid 100% of nursing care/ RN's but when my company was bought out they decided to change the policy and dramatically increase the premiums to where it was no longer affordable or practical, in regards to the time a nurse could spend caring for one in the home per day. So I had to cancel the policy and now my only insurance is Medicare, thank God. Medicare might not be the best but I am very glad I have it.
There are arguments among my family as to whether I need an attendance with me seven or eight or 10 hours during the day five days a week. I believe that some days I can be independent and do not need anyone with me. That once I am in the chair supplied with something to drink and access to a phone, I am pretty independent on the c! omputer and do not feel the need to pay for someone just to be there with me. My point of view is not only based on the financial costs but also practic! al viewpoint. Because I am not currently working, why should I pay and use my dwindling resources to pay for someone to do very little besides give me lunch.I can survive without lunch one or two days during the week and without someone been with me during the day. Some family members believe that I shouldn't be a long and that regardless of cost just having someone with me in case of the unforeseen is best.I go back and forth and just wanted to learn what others have done our believe if they have been or are experiencing similar circumstances.

I would like to know what your experiences have been with personal-care attendants, how much you pay, how many hours and any other information you can provide.
I live alone with an elderly parent and I am completely dependent whether for personal-care, dressing, bathing, eating because of my high-level injury. How much does one pay a personal attendants if their main responsibilities are to put me in the chair, dress! ing, lunch and dinner and preparing meals about three times a week, no showers or bed Bath unless I experience and accidental Foley blockage in which I might get wet. There is very light housecleaning in which only my laundry and washing dishes is necessary. Now driving is needed for not anyway.
How many hours would you suggest an attendants should be around, all day, a few hours, a few days a week or Monday through Friday. Do you pay cash or check or even claim their work as an expense on your taxes?
I would appreciate in any information you can provide.

Hi Eric,Re-run alley first .....I've always had a foley. For 20 yrs I had about a grand total of 5-6 UTIs. An incredibly low number. Drs were amazed. Then, in 2000, without doing anything differ! ent and even drinking more and being more clean down there than ever before ... I began to get fever-symptomatic UTIs.I found out that the Proteus bug was found in m! y urine on December 13th, 2004 (I'm looking in my medical journal here). My Dr didn't want to treat it! (I've dropped that Dr ... a real lowlife himself). When my husband heard it was Proteus he insisted I be treated for it. So the Dr. put me on Amoxycillin. This turned out to be a grave error. Amoxycillin took care of my symptoms but it is not the potent/real drug to clear up Proteus.! DIV>So my symptoms returned every month. And for 5 months he treated me with Amoxycillin. THIS COST ME DEARLY because it was NOT eradicating the bug and, in fact, did me more harm by allowing Proteus to grow stronger or get sneakier (be encapsulating itself in my b! ladder wall or lying dormant).I finally went to another Dr after a dispute with that Dr's mommy (HIS BILLING CLERK WHO WAS PADDING HIS POCKETS BY OVERCHARGING MEDICARE! ). My new Dr said Amoxycillin alone will not kill Proteus. He put me on VANTIN - a 3rd generation cephlasporin and he thought FOR SURE that would do it. It didn't.Next ... at home IV antibiodics. Double doses. My urine was clear after that and I thought whooopeeee! FINALLY! But that was short-lived.I finally went to a Urolo! gist who put me on a low daily dose of Augmentin (250 mgs) and it's worked for 6 months now. He also wanted to eliminate a big KIDNEY stone being a possible culprit via a CT Scan. The results showed many big BLADDER STONES (more on that in another post)Now, for your Qs...!No bug likes an acidic environment but ONCE IT'S GOT IN THERE only treatment will help. I know .. I've tried drinking more juices, taking cranberry capsules, etc to no avail.&nb! sp;I really don't have any SPECIAL sites to direct you to. Anything I've viewed has just been from a Google search on Proteus Mirabilis. My info comes from hubby having been knee deep in pee and blood for a job for 8 yrs. He knows ALL the bugs but all GOOD lab techs know that Psedemonas, Proteus, Sigalla and Salmonilla are THE BIG BAD 4 that are evil pathogens. And bastards to get rid of!Despite being symptom free for 6 months now since being on low-dose therapy ... my urine sample taken in 2 weeks ago to my Urologist showed Pseudemonas! Damn! BUT that can be good news or bad. As my husband explains it ... even though it's not a bug one want! s in their system ... It can/does have the ability to keep other bugs away. A big-dick syndrome. LOL. How lame but true.I take it day by day now. The last 5 yrs have been extra tough. Two major sores keeping me in bed 6 months with each one. Then Proteus shows up in my urine and a Dr contributed to turning it into a super bug by wrongly treating me.What are you currently on? For how long? Did you have a fever?Lori MichaelsonAGE 41C4/5 comple! te quad, 26 years postTucson, AZ-------Original Message-------Lori,I have a UTI and found out it's proteus. Could you send me information, website, etc on proteus that you found helpful. Proteus doesn'! t like anacid environment right. I never had UTI problems when I had a foley.Since I switched to a supra I've had problems. I know why too. Thesupra just doesn't drain as well. I probably will need to change theway I manage my bladder. I'll need advice on that in a week or so.Eric
