Absolutely I have a suggestion William! Or rather a good educated guess as
to what is going on with you. This is because I go through periods of this
myself.

I cannot recall when it started but, every once in a while, when my home
health agency nurse has come to catheterize me ... the same thing that
happens to you describes what happens to me. For me, it is a urethral spasm
that is short-lived.

If my nurse feels resistance she just stops and waits for the spasm to stop
and then gently tries push it in again. She never pulls it back out because
that would potentially make it less sterile. Sometimes my urethra has been
more stubborn than other times. One time we went through five catheters and
insertion trays because we forgot to tell a new nurse about my urethral
spasms and she could not figure out why the catheter would not go in.

The nurse that I have now is fantastic. It always slips right in for her.
We think it is because she angles the catheter a certain way and, by doing
this, is slides right in. I am female [obviously] but we have also found
that if we move my hips down a little bit in the bed that also helps. That
day that the nurse could not get it in after four tries ... my husband moved
my hips and that did the trick!

But, essentially, the bottom line is that I have these little urethral
spasms that we just have to wait out. Sometimes just for a couple seconds
and other times longer. But ever since I have had this nurse [since
October] I have not had a problem. So, for me, it has been a combination of
things but primarily the urethral spasm.

Even though I mentally try to relax ... it doesn't always help. I would
guess that that is exactly what is going on with you. Don't force it ...
just kind of wait it out and/or change the angle of the catheter a little
bit and try again. Gently. I hope this helps!

Subject: [QUAD-L] need help

For about the past week I have had great difficulty cathing. It goes in
about half way and then stops. It takes several efforts and some pushing to
make it enter my bladder. I don't have an infection and only occasional
pain. The pain is worst when I first get up in the morning. It is reaching a
serious point. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.
