Funny, here in Phoenix, we love the months with an "R" in them.   Temps drop below 100 and it even rains once in a while - hell, I even go outside and stay for a while - not fun in the no-"R" months.

I got one of those lights last year.  I think it works...?  It's not like taking some sort of happy pill and getting a charge, but it helps.  Some dietary stuff is supposed to help.  Fish oil, among others.  The darkness IS here in Seattle now.  The tough thing is exercise.  I need to get one of those hand cycle things, at least, if I don't feel like going outside so much.

Any other tricks you guys have for for keeping spirits up during these dark months (besides drugs and alcohol, which I know the effects of!)???

Ever heard of SAD disease? Seasonal Affective Disorder.  It has to do with the body not getting the correct kind of light during certain periods of the year.
