When they, the VA, change my catheter to a silicon I suffered for about the same period of time.  Believe it or not, I finally realized the problem when I found that older catheter and had my brother put it in to replace the silicone.  I then informed the VA, but they refuse to believe me that I was allergic to silicone until my urologist acknowledge this fact.  It actually took me going in and having the urologist try to take the silicone catheter out.

Man, I just realized I had the same thing happened with my catheter quite some time ago.  It has been well over eight years ago, but now I recall my skin kept trying to adhere to the silicone.  My memory is just not what it used to be.

I had an enormous pain in the bladder and severe bladder spasms.  Once the catheter was removed in a normal Bard catheter was inserted, the pain and spasms diminished within five minutes.  I also have the same reaction to silicone, but my skin and bladder additionally tried to adhere to the silicone.  Nobody here wants to hear my horror story about what happened with my silicone trach.  Let me just say one word: ouch!

Believe it or not I tried a Bard Foley which was coated with some sort of material which was supposed to prevent UTIs, but unfortunately I was allergic to whatever was coating the latex catheter.  I am also allergic to silicone catheters, go figure.

I keep Cipro on hand at home with standing perscriptions for cipro 500 and bactrim DS. All I need to do is call them in. Most of the time bactrim will work but occasionally I need cipro. If 250 doesn't get it in 2 days I send a urine sample and call the rx for the 500s. My doctor isn't always available and I do not run to the ER for anything. If I want a problem made worse or a new problem, I'd go to an ER. I can tell which anti biotic I need by what is going on. You should ask your doctor to give you scripts for anti biotics so you don't have to run to the ER. Cipro is an easy broad spectrum anti biotic that should hold you while the lab does the work up on your samples. I keep forgetting you guys have indwelling and supra pubic caths. I get uti's but its always low grade temps and just feeling bad. I wish you luck and still think there should be something you could have at home so you don't have those runs to the ER. God bless you and I pray you feel! better soon.
yes, I always get a flu shot unless some idiot makes a mistake and screws the national supply up. I do not shake hands

My doctor does require, for the most part, cultures when treating UTIs, unless I am running a really high temperature.

I hope you get to feeling better Quadius I know the feeling as I have had congestion and suctioning, since last Monday and had to go to ER last night for low oxidation as suggested by my visiting and the nurse practitioner on call for the doctor.  ER prescribed a job cipro.  My doctor always makes me get a culture from ostomy and my trach button although nurse did not get the first ones there in time and had to do again yesterday.

I was unfortunately not able to get my flu shot when the health department brought mine Monday.  They are going to save the shot for next Monday.  I get one every year, does anyone else get flu shots

Does your doctor for anyone else's require cultures before they treat you.  Just wondering if that was a common practice for everyone.  I guess the only way to determine if it is viral or bacterial.  What do they usually prescribe you and others on the list?

My luck was going well and then I did a simple blog about how good everything was going.  Every time I do something like that I end up regretting it later.  Anyway, I have been feeling bad for three days now, but at least I am feeling better than I was the two previous days.  I am unsure whether this is a mild UTI or whether it's something viral.

Hopefully I will be able to keep up, but I'm sure everyone understands what it is like when you feel like crap.  I tend to stay off the computer as much as possible when I am feeling weak.

I hope everyone else is doing okay.
