Mark,
I feel your pain, literally. I went in on the 29th and had a similar
experience. The doctor, my urologist, informed me she was not going to be able
to get the stones out during my routine cystoscopy, as there were too many and
my BP was already skyrocketing. Fortunately, I am scheduled to go into preop on
January 2 and then scheduled to have another cystoscopy in the operating room
on January 10. Thankfully my doctor deals with SCI patients on a weekly basis
and therefore knows enough to be very cautious. The unfortunate part is that I
had to deal with the stones until January 10 and I am also extremely hesitant
about the anesthetic. I am going to try to get them to do some sort of spinal
block instead of giving me a general anesthetic.
I was passing stones the other night and know exactly what you're going
through. However, if you are sweating and your dysreflexia seems to be getting
worse, you need to call someone and tried to get some sort of relief. I myself
have medications, like someone else on the list mentioned, and will not
hesitate to use them if I become to dysreflexic.
Drink copious amounts of fluid, especially good water, and make sure you keep
your catheter well irrigated. It may not help you pass all of the stones
without any difficulty, but it might prevent the catheter from clogging up
completely.
BTW, I mentioned previously that I had been having trouble with my catheter
not going into my SP very smoothly and I was told the problem is I have so many
stones is inhibiting the catheter from sliding in nicely. Man, if they would
have removed the stones I had last year, I would not have nearly the problems I
am having now. Imagine going from 1998 until 2005 with only two UTIs -- and
those being the result of manipulation to my bladder during a urology exam --
only to suffer three UTIs during 2006. It seems to me that stones seem to make
UTIs much easier to contract.
Well, I hope you were able to recover quickly and be able to get some relief
soon. Good luck Mark and keep us informed.

Well Monday I went in for my laser procedure and my doc couldn't get it in
one shot so I went home with an indwelling cath for some reason and of course
it clogged up during the night making me sweat like crazy.
I was laying in a pool of sweat and he told me to keep it in for 48 hours but
I was passing stones around the cath which hurts even worse than it sounds.
He told me to come back Wednesday to do it all over and I about fell out, I
gotta do this again?!
Well Wednesday I wentv in and did it again and again he put a cath in me
telling me to leave it for 48 hoursbut once again I was laying in a pool of
sweat and passing stones around the cath so we took it out and I passed several
more stones.
I never want to get another stone!
I'm recovering slowly it still hurts like hell and blood red urine just sucks.
I'll keep you posted and thanks for the card Dave!
