My daughter is not a quad or a paraplegic, but because she has no medical insurance, they asked her to leave the hospital just as soon as she wasn't critical anymore. Their excuse, she should go on a diet and lose weight, and as soon as she left the hospital, she should go to her doctor.
Even though two of us told the doctor that she had gained 45 pounds in two weeks, his answer was that diet and exercise would take care of everything. For five days in the hospital, the bill was $21,000. And because she has no insurance, she will be paying this off the rest of her life probably. And the result of her going to a doctor was, he gave her water pills and three weeks later she was down 51 pounds! Guess hospitals are only for the rich and the healthy!
