Whenever you cath (even using sterile technique) you open yourself to infection
from local viruses and bacteria. All you can do is keep everything as clean and
quick and as thourough as possible. It isn't as if you're doing anything wrong,
you are doing fine. It is just the nature of the process. You are up against
microscopic bugs that are incredibly good at getting in. E. coli is the most
common for women that are normal, but we get exposed to staph. strep. and
varients of viral stuff that doesn't even have a name.
On the bright side, you have a good chance of expelling most of any infection
with your next cath which keeps it at a level most people can tolerate without
any treatment.
To minimize your chance of infection even more you can take vitamin C in large
doses (start at 1 gram per day and work up to 4 grams over a month)and your
doctor may perscribe an anti infective. (preventative medicine? What will they
think of next?)This creates a hostile environment in your renal system for bugs
and they can't grow.
