Hi Naomi.
I use Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.1 on my desktop computer-which I have on my bedside table right now since I am confined to bed for another six weeks-and I use Microsoft Windows XP Pro. My new laptop has Microsoft Vista installed, and as I have been talking to Dana about it, I like it very much. My only problem with the speech recognition program that comes with Vista is with the extreme sensitivity of the Start Listening command. Because it begins with an S, and "S" is very common in everyday speech, it is constantly turning itself on. Unless I notice it, it will execute 20 or 30 commands, and then be hopelessly screwed up as far as I'm concerned! I am using a lapel microphone, which has an on/off switch on the cord. We're going to install a pillow switch in place of the on/off switch, and then I can just bump it and turn off the microphone. When I am working in a quiet environment-not very often I might add-it speeds right along and is a joy to use. They have added many new features that make speech recognition a real workhorse. They also have installed, way too many for my taste, security checks that will pop up and disable Speech Recognition. However, one can just go into the control panel under security and take care of the problem. My son actually partitioned my laptop, so I have one part that works with Vista and the built-in Speech Recognition, and the other partition has Windows XP and Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.1 installed. I was afraid I would not like Vista because it was so new, and all the bugs hadn't been worked out, so I wanted to be able to use the laptop with Windows XP. After three weeks, I have not gone to that partition, and I am enjoying Vista. The cost of the microphone and a pillow switch will be less than upgrading to Dragon 9.5 I am sure. As I told Dana, try it you might like it. I just needed the website. I watched the CSI episodes that I missed. I just got a new laptop about a month ago. It also has Windows XP Media Center. My husband was told to bring it back with the receipt and they would install Windows Vista for free. I wasn't sure about getting Vista, because I use Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.0 and I heard that they weren't compatible.
